How To Add Bluetooth To A Mazda 6
Here we fit a BT3 in an earlier one. Mazda 6 between 2003 and 05 often need a mod done, this one didn’t!
Stream your music, and calls in no time!
The Mazda 6 has been in production since 2002, replacing the Mazda 626, and is one of Australia’s most popular cars. It wasn’t until the 3rd Generation (GJ1) that bluetooth connectivity became standard in the Mazda 6.
For first (GG) and second (GH) generation Mazda 6 owners, there’s not been a lot of choice in music playback. Thankfully there are a number of options available to add auxiliary, USB, and Bluetooth to an older Mazda 6 without the need of replacing the headunit.
Mazda 6 GG (2002 – 2008)
The GG series Mazda 6 was first released in Japan as the Atenza, before hitting Australia available in a number of different variations ranging from Classic through to Luxury Sports.
There is full product support across the GG lifetime with our GROM Audio car kits, however it should be noted that during 2003-2005 there was a limitation with some head units and a modification is required to make it recognise a GROM adapter. While rare, this does require some soldering. We have all the info on the mod and we have spoken many of our clients through it. We can also recommend where you may get it done.
Adding Bluetooth:
For a fully integrated option that allows you to control music and calls via buttons on your stereo, and wheel too if equipped:
- GROM BT3 MAZB3
Some 03-05 head units required modification (rare) - Mazda 6 Mod
Adding USB:
For a fully integrated option that allows you to control music and calls via buttons on your stereo, and wheel too if equipped:
- GROM USB3 MAZU3
Some 03-05 head units required modification (rare)
Mazda 6 GH (2007-2012)
The GH Mazda 6 was released in 2007, similarly available in a number of variations.
Compatibility in this generation of Mazda 6 is limited to stereos that have an ‘AUX’ button on them, and only with the USB3 adapter – however it’s still possible to add bluetooth with the addition of the bluetooth dongle extension.
Adding Bluetooth:
For a fully integrated option that allows you to control music and calls via buttons on your stereo, and wheel too if equipped:
- GROM USB3 MAZ8U3 with Bluetooth Dongle Extension
Must have AUX button on stereo
Adding USB:
For a fully integrated option that allows you to control music and calls via buttons on your stereo, and wheel too if equipped:
- GROM USB3 MAZ8U3
Must have AUX button on stereo

Hi Scott
Is there any way I can check if my 2003 mazda 6 luxury will need the radio mod prior to buying the Grom. Is there some sort of identifier vin number or something printed somewhere on the car/stereo or bose amp that would give some indication of whether the mod will be required.
I’d like to learn the skill of soldering but don’t think this is the first project I should take on. 🙂
Kind Regards
Skot Biner
Hey Jed,
We have never found a way. Plug it in and try it : )
Just expect to do it and if you dont then it’s a bonus!
I myself have done it few times and have plenty of resources.
Have a Cushie day!!

Hi Skott
My BT3 arrived today. I fitted it and it worked straight away just like in your install video. No radio mod required 😁
Only issue i have is that the in dash 6 disk cd player wont play CDs with the Grom installed i can insert and eject cds but they dont play. Have you come across this before? Any fixes /work arounds you are aware of?
Cheers
Jed

Hey Jed,
Thats’s great! 👍🏻
That’s crap 👎🏼
I have never heard of it.
There is really no way it can affect it.
The CD button becomes a toggle. 1st time cd player 2nd time Grom etc.
They’re not that much fun to unplug so I’d try the module 1st and if still not happening unplug the harness.
If still no good it couldn’t hurt disconnecting the battery. And reconnecting it, but I figured you guessed that bit…..
Anyway I bet/hope you have it sorted before you even read this. Let me know
You’re also the 1st in a while that didn’t need to do the mod, you’ve restored my faith😉
Have a Cushie day!!

Hey Jed, their’s needed the mod. And their CD player does not work (even before the Grom) They disassembled the stereo and I did the mod (for free!)

hi
just got a Mazda 6 sport wagon jun07
vin, JMOGY103200305182
I watched the video. so its just pull out the glove box. Plug the cable into the back of the stereo, run the mick cable over to the A pillar. (do you just remove the door seal and tuck behind plastic cover, any worries about airbag?)
where do you put the usb cable and jack.
wife runs a motog6 phone.
How do you accept or make calls?
any help would be great.
Skot Biner
Hey Jason,
Would you rather do this over the phone?
I can ring around midday if that suits
Voice commands to make calls. That’s mapped in to Scan or Repeat button.
track buttons to accept, reject or end calls. You likely have them on your wheel too
Cheers,
Skot
