Adding Bluetooth, Android Auto or CarPlay to a Toyota LandCruiser, Prado, Sahara and Kluger
There’s a new post on CarPlay and Android Auto in the Blog check it out HERE
he Toyota LandCruiser has been around since 1951, and due to it’s reliability and longevity has become one of Australia’s most popular 4WD vehicles. Up until more modern LandCruiser variants, as with many cars of the era, USB and Bluetooth connectivity isn’t common.
Here’s a quick photo guide of how easy it can be to ad a Grom or Dension kit to your Toyota
In more modern J200 series LandCruiser’s there was the inclusion of handsfree (HFP) bluetooth, but still no A2DP support for audio streaming. Given these cars are wildly popular in Australia, and retain a lot of their value, it’s left a lot of owners craving for more modern connectivity. Thankfully there are a number of options available to add bluetooth to a Toyota LandCruiser, 2007 on VLIne is available for the touchscreen models!
- LandCruiser J70 Series (1998 – onwards)
- LandCruiser J100 Series (1998 – 2009)
- LandCruiser J200 Series (2007 – onwards) VLine
- LandCruiser 2009 on VLine
LandCruiser J70 (1998 – onwards)
The J70 Series LandCruiser is the off-road work horse of the Toyota lines, produced since 1984. It’s received a facelift in 2007, otherwise remain largely unchanged from the original indestructible 4WD.
Given that production started in 1984 and is still being produced today, it’s worth checking your head unit capabilities before purchasing. Specifically you need to ensure that it has a CD Changer port on the back, and perhaps take a photo of the port so that the correct cable (new vs old) can be matched to you.
Adding Bluetooth:
For a fully integrated option that allows you to control music and calls via buttons on your stereo:
- GROM BT3 TOYOB3 (1998-2003) or GROM BT3 TOYNB3 (2003-2012)
Not compatible with head units equipped with DVD
Alternative option that can be more universally compatible, but do not have integrated controls:
- Tunai Firefly is a Bluetooth receiver that streams audio in to your head unit via AUX port
Requires factory standard AUX input and USB power (via port of cigarette lighter) - Compact BT a universally compatible Bluetooth receiver with FM transmitter (or AUX) that sits behind the dash
Hard wired for power
Adding USB:
For a fully integrated option that allows you to control music and calls via buttons on your stereo:
- GROM USB3 TOYOU3 (1998-2003) or GROM USB3 TOYNU3 (2003-2012)
Not compatible with head units equipped with DVD
LandCruiser J100 (1998 – 2007)
The J100 Series LandCruiser began production in 1998 right through til 2007. It received a number of minor revisions through the years, but fundamentally remained the same throughout its life.
Compatibility with the J100 series is great, and you should have no issue fitting a product.
Adding Bluetooth:
For a fully integrated option that allows you to control music and calls via buttons on your stereo and wheel if equiped:
- GROM BT3 TOYOB3 (1998-2003) or GROM BT3 TOYNB3 (2003-2012)
Not compatible with head units equipped with DVD - Dension Gateway Lite BT GBL3TO1 (2002-2010)
Only compatible with navigation head units
Not compatible with head units equipped with DVD - Dension Gateway Lite GWL3TO1 (2002-2010)
Only compatible with navigation head units
LandCruiser J200 (2007 – 2012)
Introduced in 2007, the J200 Series LandCruiser is the latest model in the Toyota comfort 4WD range. A lot of J200 LandCruisers across the life span have come equipped with more modern connectivity such as AUX input, USB, and Bluetooth handsfree (and sometimes with A2DP audio streaming too).
It’s a frustration of some J200 owners that their more modern, and very expensive 4WD, doesn’t allow them to connect their media devices the way they want to. And it’s often not an option to replace the entire head unit as it’s critical to other functions.
2010 saw the introduction of the USB port which renders the Grom and Dension kits incompatible.
Adding Bluetooth:For a fully integrated option that allows you to control music and calls via buttons on your stereo:
- GROM BT3 TOYNB3 (2003-2012)
Not compatible with 2010 on with USB input
Adding USB with optional Bluetooth:
For a fully integrated option that allows you to control music and calls via buttons on your stereo:
- GROM USB3 TOYOU3 (1998-2003) or GROM USB3 TOYNU3 (2003-2012)
Not compatible with with USB in 2010 on
Here’s some images of Various Toyota’s we’ve done recently. Each one taking the same kit be it the Grom TOYNU3 or TOYNB3 Or Dension GBL3TO1
And now Grom Vline!

G’Day, I have a 2007 Sahara that I am looking to upgrade to one of these style units, but I have a query about the factory Nav ECU. Mine has failed meaning I have no factory GPS display on on my unit, as well as all the maintenance intervals and some of the menu data are no longer available. I currently have the Climate Control (4 zone), Radio.CD and Bluetooth phone still available. Would this unit work for me with these issues in mind?

Hey John,
It’s hard to say 100% but this is what I’ve found. I have a couple of head units on my bench to test VLines and they work with barely any factory modules plugged in. One has no maps, like yours.
Both have no BT module, Amp, climate control etc but work they do.
It still uses your factory BT for phone calls but if you’re an iphone user you’ll use CarPlay
What does causes probs some times is adding non factory accessories to the expansion ports VLine use. But as they are usually to get some kind of Aux input in to them no one is going to miss them : )
If it’s anything else I get them to unplug any non factory items, get Vline running and then try plugging them back in
The Vline is very easy to plug in to find out and I’m happy to take it back if it doesnt.
Call me a little later if you have any more Q’s or concerns as I’m always up for a chat about them!
Cheers,
Skot
